About & Contact

Deborah Edmeades was born in London, England and now lives and works on the unceded territories of the səlilwətaɬ, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, otherwise known as Vancouver, Canada. She roots her practice in performance, which has continued at times outside of an artistic context in the form of therapeutic and spiritual inquiry. More recently she has been investigating the historical underpinnings of contemporary New Age religion—especially in its relationship to the feminine struggle for spiritual authority.

Edmeades as shown her work at the Western Front (2018), Artspeak (2016), and Unit17 (2020) in Vancouver; at SPACE Mercer Union, in Toronto (2017); and at Participant Inc. (2015), the Pratt Manhattan Gallery (2015), and the Knitting Factory (1995), among many others in New York City; as well as further afield including Europe, South Korea and Brazil. She has received grants from Franklin Furnace Archive NYC, Canada Council for the Arts, and the BC Arts Council. In 2000, she was visiting artist and guest lecturer of performance art at the University of Texas at Austin. In 2014 she received an MFA from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.
