The Painter, 2001–2002
The Painter takes its structure from an invented childhood game. In this game for two, one person plays the painter and the other – who in this case is also the camera person lying on the floor with their legs and feet in the air – is the stool on which the painter sits. The painter is painting a portrait – possibly a self portrait – and self-importantly narrates what he is doing out loud. Every time that he is doing the “hardest part of all”, inevitably the eyelashes, the stool gives him a good shove and his picture is ruined. Angry and baffled, he starts the picture over and over and over again.
